Weekend Road Round-up: Lake Region, Craftsbury Girls, More

September 29, 2013

GIRLS SOCCER
Lake Region 2, BFA Fairfax 1
FAIRFAX–After a first half that featured no goals whatsoever, the Lady Rangers put up two in the second to the Bullets' one, and picked up their sixth win of the season.
"We played very well, and a win on the road at BFA Fairfax is a big thing," said LRU coach Brad Urie.
Thirteen minutes into the second, BFA won the race to the scoreboard when Celena Marrier scored on a loose ball in front of LRU keeper Jordyn Cowles.
Haley Kennedy, and I want to briefly apologize here for any misspellings of her name, as the roster has her name spelled incorrectly, helped even up the score two minutes later when her cross was put home on a shot by Rachelle Cotnoir that glanced off of the Bullet's goalie's glove and went in.
Megan Menard had the game winner for Lake Region with eight minutes to go in the game.
A direct kick rang off of the crossbar, dropped into the 18, where a waiting Menard delivered the decisive blow in favor of the visiting team.
Cowles stopped 12 in the contest, while the Lady Rangers directed 19 shots at the Fairfax net.
Said Urie, "We should have had three of four more goals today, but we had the better of the play, so..."
Now 6-1, Lake Region will host Oxbow on Tuesday at 4:00.
Cratsbury 5, Whitcomb 3
ROCHESTER-After suffering a 4-1 loss to Burke Mountain on Thursday in a game where Amy DeLaBruere had the lone Lady Charger goal, Craftsbury Academy bounced back on Friday, as Melanie Sergiev's hat trick lead her team past Whitcomb.
"Mel was awesome for us," said CA coach Ashley Maxfield. "Mel was in center and she got some great crosses from Amy and Sarah (Dunbar) which she was able to put home."
Whitcomb had the early lead, 3-2, after forty minutes of play.
Sergiev scored her first of the game in the half, and Aysha Hodgdon had the other on a free kick.
In the second half, Hodgdon moved into the nets, allowing Emma Spiese to come out and add a fresh pair of legs to a team that was playing without any subs.
"Emma gave us us new life when she came up in the second half," Maxfield said.
With a new burst of energy, Sergiev scored twice more, with assists going to DeLaBruere and Dunbar.
Dunbar had the other goal with an assist going to DeLaBruere.
Now 4-4, the girls hit the road on Tuesday to face Chelsea.
BOYS SOCCER
Lake Region 1, BFA Fairfax 1
FAIRFAX–BFA scored in the first half, and Lake Region in the second, and after overtime, nothing had been settled, so both teams walked away with a tie.
It was a day for the scoring Alex's as Alex Ferguson's header in the first half gave a 1-0 lead for BFA (7-1-1).
However, in the second, Lake Region's Alex Beauregard tied things up for the Rangers (5-2-1) just a minute into the half, and that is how the game would end.
Danny Epinette had 15 saves for the Rangers, who will host Oxbow on Wednesday at 4:00.
Other local boys scores include Craftsbury tying Whitcomb 3-3 and UCA falling to Trinity Baptist 6-0.
The Chargers will host Cabot on Friday, while the Crusaders will play at Craftsbury next Tuesday.
