NEWPORTâBrock Paquette medaled with a 71 to lead Essex past BFA and North Country on Friday afternoon at the Newport Country Club.
Essex shot a match-low 302, while BFA was second with a 335.
For North Country, they had three players finish their round.
Evan Clark shot a 90, Isaiah Carbonneau a 110, and Coty Wright came into the clubhouse with a 112.
The boys travel to Shelburne on Tuesday for a CVU hosted match.
Six hours of driving and five hours of golf is what the North Country Union High School Girls golf team had this week.
Competing in South Burlington on Wednesday and Enosburg Falls on Thursday gave the team a wide variety of play. While one course is open and loaded with hazards and thick rough, the other is narrow with a forgiving rough.
Both days found Captain Paige Gagnon and new comer Tanika Demers representing NCU. Tanikaâs experience on the two courses was like night and day.
Enosburg was her better day, scoring a 61 for the nine hole tournament. She did find herself âin the trees, but I took my club and hit that ball so nicely right between the many trees and landed about 80 yards from the green,â Demers said.
Coach Hampton believes a little more experience will show a major improvement in her score. Paige Gagnonâs day on Thursday had a challenging start, having according to her âtripped down the stairs at the high school and thinking here is a sign that I shouldnât play golf today. But by the next to last hole of the tournament I had a par, and then boogied the final hole, by then I was feeling good about the game.â North Country tied for fifth in the seven team tournament.
Lake Region 14, Hazen 4
HARDWICKâThe Rangers had no trouble handling the Hazen Wildcats, as they won decisively in five innings.
Matt Messier had three doubles and drove in three runs to lead the Rangers on Thursday.
Dilon Gile drove in four runs on a single and a double, and Logan Harper had three hits and two RBI's.
Dustin Bathalon earned the win with his four innings of work.
Tuesday will find 5-3 Lake Region in Fairfax for a much anticipated rematch with the Bullets at 4:30.
Milton 17, NCU 7
NEWPORTâNorth Country had plenty of offense on Thursday, but Milton was a little bit better, as they came away with the win against the Falcons.
Anna Bingham had a homerun, and scored twice, Tori Kinney was 2-4 and Taylor Blake, who took the loss, was 2-2 with a double.
All in all, North Country cranked out 10 hits against Milton.
Now 2-6, the girls host Colchester on Tuesday.
Lake Region 38, Hazen 2
HARDWICK-After having their 3-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday, the Lake Region Rangers softball team got back on track Thursday, defeating host Hazen 38-2 in a game played in a constant drizzle.
With a handful of players battling illness or injuries, the Rangers sent a different looking squad to the diamond, but the results were the same as when these two clubs met on opening day.
An eight-run second inning put LR up 12-1, and pitchers Michelle Thibeault and Hannah Leroux combined on a 2-hitter, striking out 11 in the shortened 5-inning contest.
Jordyn Cowles, drawing the start behind the plate for Lake Region, paced the offense with a 4-for-6 day that included a pair of doubles and 5 RBIs.
Kayla Royer and Katie Menard combined to cross the plate 11 times, while Jade Jarvis collected 3 hits including a triple.
Ten straight batters reached base for LR in a 12-run 5th inning, highlighted by a Megan Menard 2-run home run.
âWe were hoping to work on our defense today. But between the slick field conditions and Michelle and Hannah striking out 11 (batters), we didnât really get that chance,â said LR coach Matt Tinker. âWe had four starters sick or injured, so it was good to see some of these other girls get the playing time and come through.â
All 12 Rangers collected at least one hit in the game, while Corrina Cota, Whitney Poginy, and Royer each had three stolen bases.
The Rangers move to 5-3 at the midway point of the season, while Hazen drops to 0-7.
On deck for Lake Region is a rematch with D2 powerhouse Fairfax on Tuesday in Fairfax, before hosting Whitcomb on Thursday.
