WILLISTON–Former Jay Peak Club Pro and Current Stowe Mountain Club Assistant Pro Dave Jankowski teamed up with a trio of North Country high school golfers, Alex Giroux, Katie Goulet and Tyler Smith, to play at the Vermont PGA Pro-Junior Champions event at the Williston Country Club on June 30th.
The end result was an extremely satisfying one for the quartet, as they shot a 137, edging out teams from Vermont National and Country Club of Barre by one stroke to take home the Gross title.
"It was a great day with good weather," said Jankowski. "The kids enjoyed it, competed well, and their conduct at the event was exceptional."
The win earned the three youngsters brand new Vermont PGA Pro-Junior golf bags.
Jankowski and NCU trio are no strangers, as Dave took the boys to this event two years ago, and he started giving Katie lessons four years ago.
"You can see how hard they have worked and how much their game has developed," Jankowski said about the high schoolers' golf evolution.
Dave credits a lot of the kids' success to not only their dedication to the game, but to the Junior NEK Tour, which gives the area's youth golfers a chance to really develop their game by playing at a variety of courses in the area and interacting with, and competing against, a variety of opponents.
"You can see the experience they get from competing at all of the different venues of the Tour," Jankowski said.
Dave himself had a pretty good day at the event, as he shot a match-low 73 to take home $128.00 in prize in money as well as getting his shot closest to the hole of the 4th hole.
The Orleans Country Club also had a team at the event, as Club Pro Josh Olney teamed with Mason Robinson Jr., Olivia King, and Sam King to finish 9th in the net and 13th in the gross.
Looking ahead, The 2014 NEK Junior Tour will kick off on the 10th of July at the Orleans Country Club with a free clinic starting at 12:00, followed by the opening match at 1:00.
Two days later on July 12th, there will be a New England PGA Junior Tour event at the Stowe Country Club.
It will start with a junior jamboree at 9:00, followed by the NEJrPGA match at 12:00.
