Girlfriend held for allegedly harboring him.
NEWPORT CITY – Dwayne Calloway Jr. of Newport was arrested Thursday and is being held on $25,000 bail after he allegedly threatened his mother, Bernadette Dewing, with a machete and a gun, ransacked her Hinman Street home, and later attacked a Massachusetts man with a knife and punched out the window of the man's car on Wednesday.
Calloway's girlfriend, Alyssa Ciccarelli, 22, of Turners Falls, MA, who was present during the knife attack, is being held on $5,000, pending arraignment, for allegedly lying to police about Calloway's whereabouts. As of mid-afternoon Thursday, neither one had made bail.
Jared Pezzuto, 31, of Turners Falls, MA, the purported victim of the knife attack, was taken to North Country Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released, according to the Newport City Police.
Police issued a bulletin that Calloway was being sought by them and was considered armed and dangerous. City police, state police, and border patrol agents sought Calloway Wednesday night.
City police and sheriff's deputies arrested Calloway at a relative's home on Union Street around 11 a.m. Thursday. According to an eyewitness, the house was surrounded by law enforcement officials, some with their hand on their sidearms. However, Calloway was arrested without incident.
According to Sgt. Seth DiSanto of the Newport City Police, Calloway is charged with aggravated domestic assault, aggravated assault, unlawful mischief and recklessly endangering another person.
Ciccarelli is charged with being an accessory after the fact, said DiSanto.
“I asked the witness (Ciccarelli) repeatedly where he was and she said that she didn’t know,” said DiSanto. “I asked her where her children were and she said they were at her aunt’s house on Union Street.”
Police suspected Ciccarelli wasn’t being truthful and went to the home on Union Street where they located Calloway.
