BARRE–The Derby Kings basketball team, comprised of mainly 6th and 7th graders, with four 8th graders as well, went 2-0 at the One Day Run Tournament this past Saturday.
The boys competed in the "A" level 8th grade division, and had little difficulty holding their two opponents to an average of just thirty points per game.
The Kings, using a combination of height, speed and quickness to double up their opposition, scoring close to sixty points per game.
Kendrick Gray, Colin Myrick and Trey Azur were the top scorers on the team, but Derby got contributions from everyone on the roster.
It was not just the scoring a defense that coaches George Azur and Dennis Myrick were impressed with, the team chemisty of the new unit, playing together in their first tournament, really caught their eye.
"Our team showed a lot of unselfishness and worked very hard. It was a total team effort," said Azur.
The boys are back in action this weekend as they travel south on I-91 for a tournament in Lyndonville.
The Kings would like to thank the following sponsors; Ray Pronto, Fran Azur, Little G's, Sharpening Shed, Freedom Physical Therapy, Farm Yard Store, Al's Snowmobiles, Jack Degré Contracting, Jonathon Bouchard, Ron Limoges, Dan and Ann and IROC.
