DERBY – Community National Bank officials and the Vermont State Police are warning customers of a scam.
Trooper Amy Borsari wrote in a press release that scammers are sending text messages that read “CNB ALERT” and requesting customers call a phone number in regards to their debit card either being deactivated or canceled.
Scammers also try to reach their prey via e-mail and phone calls. Customers are asked to call a number originating from an unknown location, said Steve Marsh, president, chief executive officer and chair of the board of Community National Bank. “It’s pretty hard to tell in this day and age,” he said.
State police said the message did not come from the bank and that bank officials don’t request information via e-mail or text messages.
The scam is not a new one and is not limited to Community National Bank customers. “It’s happening nationwide,” Marsh said. Somehow, scammers are able to access debit card information from victims. “Now the bad guys are phishing, trying to get passwords.”
Marsh didn't know if any other local banks have victims who experienced this most recent scam.
Marsh said the bank is also a victim because it reimburses victims' money.
As of yesterday, the bank has not paid out any money but expects it will. Marsh said the amount will be less than $5,000. The money is not insured because the FDIC only insures deposits.
Both Marsh and the Vermont State Police stressed that bank officials will never ask customers for such things as passwords. Marsh doesn’t know how many victims fell for this latest scam, but said it wasn’t very many.
This scam is part of the cost of doing business in the electronic age and is another way of people robbing banks, Marsh said.
A customer alerted the bank of this most recent scam Tuesday.
Community National Bank customers who who have fallen victim to the scam or who have questions should contact their local branch.
