NEWPORT CITY – New Year’s Day will forever be memorable for Darlene Gilchrist and Cody Reynolds of Island Pond.
Not only did the couple have the first baby of the New Year to be born at North Country Hospital, they also had the first baby of 2013 to be born in the state.
Sayge Reynolds came into the world at 1:59 a.m. Her weight was six pounds, five ounces and she was 20 inches long.
“It’s exciting,” said Gilchrist. “Just to know I was the first one in all of Vermont to have a baby of the New Year.”
Cody Reynolds, who wasn’t sure how to react, said he was taking it all in.
Sayge’s early birth came as a surprise to the family. Initially, she was supposed to be born Jan. 22, then Jan. 10.
Sayge joins five-year-old Niomie and three-year-old Mallory.
“We’re proud to have the first here in Newport,” said Dr. William Peck of North Country OBGYN. “It’s a great way to start the New Year. Babies are a sign of hope.”
This is the first time North Country Hospital has had the first baby in the state.
Reynolds' mother, Beth Belmore of Island Pound, said, “I’m very excited and thrilled. It’s a great way to start the New Year.”
Sayge has now qualified for the Newport Daily Express 2013 First Baby Contest!
