DERBY – In an effort to prevent the kind of turmoil prevalent at the Derby Select Board meetings over the last year, the board decided to adopt Roberts Rules of Order as the format for their public meetings and move all public comments and questions to the first part of the meeting.
The concept was supported by newly elected member Grant Spates, who said at a previous meeting that it works well at other meetings he attends. Over the last year or more, the town faced some very heated controversial discussions.
However, the move to only allow public comments during the start of meetings is causing some concern among a few residents. Former board member Karen Jenne said the public should be allowed to weigh in on issues at the time they are being discussed. She said the public may have some very useful information to include. She would also like to see more specific agenda items listed on the warning.
