BARTON–The baseball diamond in downtown Barton will be the site of the 2013 12-U Vermont State Cal Ripken Championship, starting on Friday July 5th.
Lake Region is the host team and North Country, despite losing in their district final, will also be at the tournament.
The other two teams will come from the Randolph area and Hartford.
Going into play on Friday, Lake Region has to be considered one of the favorites, as they reeled off three wins in a row to win the district tournament up here last weekend.
LR's Glover Connection of Rian Hayman-Jones and Parker Brown give the blue and white a heady 1-2 pitching combination that can match skills with anybody in the tournament.
For North Country, they will have to look to rebound after being shut-out in two straight games.
Aidan Gariepy is the team's top hurler, but Noah Gonthier is always ready to take the bump, and is not afraid of a high pitch count.
Both teams have some heavy hitters and the ability to play good defense, but LR gets the nod in the speed department, so it would not be a surprise to see them be a menace on the base paths.
As for the other two combatants, not much was available on them, but it is known that Hartford has a pitcher that has been said to be able to bring the ball to the plate in the low 80's.
The action will get underway on Friday with a doubleheader, starting at 6:00.
North Country is the first local team up, and Lake Region will be in the second contest, under the lights, starting as soon as the first game wraps up.
Play will continue on Saturday at 2:00 with the winners of the first two games going head-to-head.
At 5:00 the two losers from game 1and 2 will meet, with the loser heading home.
The same scenario will apply at 8:00 when the winner from the 5:00 game meets the loser from the 2:00.
The Championship game is set for Sunday, and could be at 1:00 or 4:00.
See you all at the ballpark!
