COVENTRY - Coventry voters will be asked at Town Meeting if they want to have their own fire department. If they say yes, the town will be asked to approve a budget of $515,000. If they do, the department already has a crew. Local residents are ready and willing to man the pumps for Coventry. The money includes constructing a building and equipping the department. Coventry, because of tipping fees from New England Waste Services landfill, doesn't have municipal taxes, thus there will be no out of pocket expenses to the taxpayers. The money would likely come out of the reserve fund, which is $5.2 million. Departments from Newport City, Newport Center, Orleans, and Irasburg currently provide first responder fire service to the town. Coventry has to pay for each piece of equipment and each firefighter who responds to a call. Coventry also pays some capital expenses to the Newport City Fire Department. For more of this story, see page 1 of Wednesday's edition of The Newport Daily Express for Feb. 27, 2013.
